Reins of Life Honored at
February 23, 2004 Philadelphia 76ers' Hometown Hero Ceremony
Judy Freedman is the founder and executive director
of the Reins of Life program based out of Chester County … the
non-profit corporation is comprised of trained professionals
who provide therapeutic horseback riding for children with
physical disabilities … established in 1993, Reins
of Life is dedicated to offering a pleasant and natural environment
towards the enhancement of physical, emotional, and cognitive
abilities of children and young adults with special needs …

Hand became involved in Reins of
Life in 2000 as a board member and trainer and has been an
inspiration to her colleagues and young riders of the Reins
of Life program … Born with Spina bifida, a birth defect
in which the bones of the spine (vertebrae) do not form properly
around the spinal cord, Hand has competed nationally and internationally,
winning a gold medal at the Paralympics in England and serving
as the U.S. Team Captain in Sydney … Hand has also created
the first Paralympics training clinic in Pennsylvania and continues
to inspire children who participate in the program.
